Tuning and How We Do It

TUNING

WHAT ARE WE TRYING TO ACHIEVE?

..........BEST POWER..........

At Best Power the Operating Parameters, AFR, Ignition, Fuel, etc are as good as they can be. Depending on the bike we may only be able to adjust one or two of them. usually fuel, sometimes ignition and valve timing.

WE TUNE FOR BEST POWER       Why? Because that is what we actually want.

TUNING FOR BEST POWER MAKES SENSE (if you think about it)
At Best Power the engine is getting the maximum efficiency (burn) from the available fuel and air.

If Combustion was too lean or too rich then you wouldn’t make Best Power

AN ENGINE MAKES BEST POWER WHEN THE COMBUSTION

PROCESS IS AT ITS OPTIMUM.

WHEN THE COMBUSTION PROCESS IS AT ITS OPTIMUM THE

ENGINE MAKES BEST POWER.

THATS IT, THATS ALL WE NEED TO KNOW

Tuning for Best Power ensures the best outcome

The engine is operating at its most efficient

BMEP is a maximum

Torque is maximum

HP is maximum

At the end of the day the your engine's output is entirely dependant on the Operating Conditions in the Combustion Chamber.

How do we ensure we have the Optimum Operating Conditions?

By Tuning to Best Power!

Why dont we use a WBO2 like other people?

WHY USE A MULTI GAS EGA ?
As part of the Tuning Process we use a 4 Gas Exhaust Gas Analyser to help us make sense of the Combustion Process.
The Combustion Process is what determines how much Power your engine will make so it makes sense to monitor it as best you can.
Residual O2 is mainly unburnt Oxygen in the exhaust. This is what O2 sensors detect.
Residual O2 is mostly a non-participent in the Combustion Process and doesn’t mean much when looked at by itself.

SOME OF THE ADVANTAGES OF “SEEING” MORE THAN RESIDUAL O2

Fuel balance between cylinders eg No1 lean, No2 rich, unbalanced injectors,
A WBO2 can’t see this unless you have one on each cylinder.
A Multi-Gas EGA indicates unbalanced cylinder mixtures.

Incorrect Ignition Timing        Exhaust Gas Composition changes
A WBO2 sees extra oxygen and assumes the mixture is lean.
A Multi-Gas EGA detects the change in exhaust gas composition, O2, CO2, HC proportions change.

Valve Timing, Exhaust Reversion etc   Exhaust Gas Composition changes
A WBO2 sees a lean mixture because of the extra O2 and NOx from the recirculated exhaust.
A Multi-Gas EGA detects the Gas imbalance in the Exhaust Gas composition

The 4 Gas EGA detects and shows the results of both Combustion, and Non-Combustion Events
The WBO2 measures a single gas which is part of the Non-Combustion Event

High Residual Oxygen levels are often a symptom of some “Problem” Adjusting the mixture to get the Oxygen level “right”(by adjusting the AFR) is treating the Symptom and not the Cause

EGA Results have to be interpreted and the Tuner has to think about what he is doing and what he is going to do. Some knowledge and understanding of Combustion Theory and the Chemical Process involved is required to help interpret the EGA results
Using an Automatic WBO2 “Tune to an AFR” System is easy to do but to get decent result rquires a lot of extra input from the Dyno operator.

Its all very well knowing all this but you need the right equipment to make use of all this new found knowledge.

fits the bill perfectly

and I just happen to have one!!
